2008 Alumni Awards - Selection Criteria
Student Awards
A SJSU Transcript (an unofficial copy or SIS printout is acceptable) must be sent to the dean’s office to complete all student nominations.
Eligibility:
- All current College of Engineering students with a graduation date of May 2008 or later, are eligible.
- Each department may nominate no more than two students for each award.
- The Lockheed Martin Excellence in Academic Performance for an Undergraduate Student
- The College of Engineering Award for Academic Performance for a Graduate Student
Distinguished academic performance is usually reflected by a high grade point average in both major and total GPA. Demonstrated outstanding and creative academic achievement in the major. - The Donald Beall-Rockwell Award for Engineering Accomplishment
Exceptional accomplishments in either the senior project for undergraduate students or the project/thesis for graduate students constitute significant engineering achievements. Particularly noteworthy is recognition in the University Research Forum. Other examples of significant engineering accomplishments include substantial participation in successfully completed industrial projects, the awarding of patents, and the presentation or publication of professional papers. - The Scott T. Axline Memorial Student Award for Excellence in Service
Can be rendered as service to fellow students, the department, college, university, or the community. Examples include substantial involvement in outreach, tutoring and mentoring, student government, academic committees, professional societies, church and civic organizations and athletics. While the forms of service are various, we look for noteworthy contributions beyond one’s direct personal interests. Academic performance is not a selection criterion for this category provided that the nominee has maintained a good academic standing.
Faculty Awards
Eligibility:
- Tenured and tenure-track faculty are eligible for these faculty awards.
- The Faculty Award for Excellence in Scholarship
Awarded for excellence of research accomplishment based on significant and original contributions to knowledge. Criteria include quality of refereed publications, recognition through awards of professional societies, and recommendations of acknowledged authorities. - The McCoy Family Faculty Award for Excellence in Service
Awarded for excellence of service to students, faculty, departments, college, university or community. This award is based on recognition of a particular significant accomplishment, or a sustained and exemplary record of service. - The Applied Materials Award for Excellence in Teaching
Awarded for excellence in teaching as evidenced by development of innovative instructional or assessment techniques or materials, sustained classroom excellence as indicated by student evaluations and peer evaluations, development of new courses/curricula that enhance educational opportunities for students, and other activities that enhance the educational environment in the college. - Newnan Brothers Faculty Award
Awarded to a faculty member on the basis of a combination of factors including: excellence in teaching and service to students, or teaching and research, or teaching, research and service to students.
Staff Award
- The Onslow H. Rudolph, Jr. Staff Excellence in Service Award
Awarded to a College of Engineering staff member for excellence of service to students, faculty, departments, college, university or community. This award is based on recognition of a particular significant accomplishment, or a sustained and exemplary record of service.
