Welcome New Students to the College of Engineering!

A strong transition to a four year college is an important bridge for new First Year and Transfer students to cross. An inspiring program and reception filled with balloons and student clubs energy was hosted by the Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering on Friday, Sept. 11 in the Student Union Ballroom. Dean Belle Wei's opening remarks about students responsibility to their own education referenced President Obama's speech, which he made on Sept. 8, 2009 at the Back to School Event in Arlington, Virginia. Dean Wei quoted, "But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, and the best schools in the world - and none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities." Dean Wei further encouraged students to become global citizens while pursuing the most difficult major, Engineering.

Associate Dean, Emily Allen, demonstrated the importance of student engagement in the classroom with a fun ice-breaker. Student attendees were asked to introduce themselves to their neighboring college mates at this Welcome Event and to find out something unique about the fellow student. Dr. Allen emphasized the impact of sitting in front of the classroom: it increases your GPA, improves the likelihood of asking questions, and helps the faculty to get to know you.

These exciting opportunities and resources were available at this Welcome Event:

  • Meet and talk with department chairs, faculty, and engineering students leaders and scholars
  • Meet and hear from a student who just returned from the Global Technology Initiative (GTI), a two-week study tour in India
  • Meet a representative from the Career Center, Engineering Student Success Center, Engineering Outreach, and MESA/CELL/ELCAS Program
  • Raffle prizes that included SJSU hoodies
  • Interact with other Engineering students like yourself
  • Pizza tasting (10 different kinds) and healthy snacks!

These Fall 2009 students have just begun to take their first steps toward an exciting time in their life, and the College of Engineering is happy to be part of it!
